How D&D Birthed Gaming

Dungeons & Dreamers: The Rise of Computer Game Culture from Geek to Chic, a new book by Brad King and John Borland, expores the roots of video gaming with full awareness that said roots are inextricably intertwined with other geek interests such as computer programming, math, science and fantasy role-play. An excerpt of the book from the pair's website details the origins of Richard Garriott, who would later become known to legions of Ultima fans as Lord British. This solid first chapter seems like an excellent starting point in the historical and cultural mapping of the wide-spread geek phenomenon of video games. I'll be reading more.
